The beginning.
In 2012, the Lord laid on my heart to start a ministry or organization to help women in some way. I have had many ideas, but struggled with how to go about starting something. I didn’t have a team. I didn’t have money. I felt stuck. I became pregnant at the end of 2019, then the pandemic started a few months later. I really struggled with being pregnant during such a difficult time, and I thought of how other pregnant women might be feeling. This led me to start making care packages with basic necessites that moms and newborns need. I wasn’t able to make many. I tried to do ten a month. It wasn’t much and the packages didn’t contain a lot, but it was something. To help fund the packages and to help provide for our growing family, I started an Instagram store. I sold secondhand clothing, unused makeup, and accessories. With some of the money I made I was able to continue making the packages for a while. My store started growing more than I had expected it to, so I began saving for a different ministry idea that I felt the Lord had laid on my heart.
After the pandemic and when we were able to attend church again I presented the idea of a sewing ministry to the female leaders of our church. In June 2023, we had our first class and it was a huge hit. For now, we meet once a month for lessons after our women’s meetings. My mother-in-law is our teacher, and the women have been loving learning to sew on machines as well as by hand. Among myself, my mother-in-law, and the pastor’s wife, we have four sewing machines that we are able to use for classes. They do not always work so well, but we have been able to make do with what we have.
There is a lot of need in the community, so my hope is that learning to sew will be a skill the ladies can use to help provide for their families in some way. I didn’t want the women to have to purchase anything for the lessons so a portion of the income from my store pays for all the fabrics, threads, needles, etc. that we need. I felt that this was something that the Lord had pressed on me. He has provided and continues to provide for this growing ministry. The classes are open to all women in the community, whether they attend our church on Sundays or not, completely for free. It is a great way to make connections, build relationships, and share God’s love with the women of the community.
The ministry is almost a year old and I am so excited to see what God does through it in this next year.
Please be praying for us and the ladies in the community.
Love how implementing arts, crafts, and essential can bring out so much good! God’s doing big things in these groups. It’s so important to meet people where they are at and carry the good Lords message🙏
Thank you, Winston, for your encouraging comment! God bless you!
